Filing for the 2023-24 Center for New Liberalism Steering Committee has opened. Before filing to run, please be sure to read the entire webpage ([link removed]) as the 2022-23 Steering Committee has voted on some changes to the structure of the committee meaning that the 2023-24 Committee will look different.

New Chapters

We are excited to announce the launch of two new chapters: Huntsville, AL ([link removed]) and Raleigh-Durham, NC ([link removed]) !

NC Newsline: HB2 Shadow Still Looms Large in NC, But How Large? ([link removed])

Author: Blair Reeves

Pull Quote: One is the “MAGA-fication” of the GOP, which has supercharged political polarization and convinced a small but vocal segment of Americans on the Right to give up on democracy itself. A language of punishment now permeates our politics. It is not just common, but increasingly fashionable, to make a show of singling out disfavored groups, and in the eyes of partisan opponents, to show them their place.

Liberal Currents: YIMBYism for Colleges ([link removed])

Author: Nick Felker

Pull Quote: We need to say “Yes in my backyard”, not just for housing but for education. If we really believe that college is good, we should be investing not just in existing students but in expanding to more. We need to ensure that costs remain affordable and not burdening those just starting in their careers.

Priced Out UK: Community Land Auctions ([link removed])

Author: Freddie Poser

Pull Quote: With the power to run these auctions, local authorities could capture much more of the land value uplift associated with granting planning permissions by effectively auctioning them off. This is money they could use to fund vital local services and to make sure that the wider community benefits when it hosts new development. Land value capture is a ‘holy grail’ for many housing campaigners, which is why so many…support Community Land Auctions, even if they might disagree with the Government more generally.

Newsweek: Federal Action on Housing Affordability is Past Due ([link removed])

Author: Elijah Gullett

Pull Quote: The bounds of the housing affordability issue now far exceed city limits. America’s inability to build new housing is stifling economic and creating hardship for American families. To meaningfully address the housing affordability issue, federal “carrots” and “sticks” are needed to encourage cities across the U.S. to update their laws…
