Center for New Liberalism June Newsletter

Join us for our next New Liberal Action Summit on July 13-15 in Washington, D.C.! We’re bringing together the CNL chapters, our allies in Congress, expert academics, and our other New Liberal friends for a convening on the importance of building a broad center-left political coalition and a discussion of a New Liberal political agenda.

New this year will be a series of political engagement events to help sharpen your skills as an advocate and organizer, including opportunities to meet your local representatives.

Registration is open: https://cnliberalism.org/nlas-dc

NC NewslineHB2 Shadow Still Looms Large in NC, But How Large?

Author: Blair Reeves

Pull Quote: One is the “MAGA-fication” of the GOP, which has supercharged political polarization and convinced a small but vocal segment of Americans on the Right to give up on democracy itself. A language of punishment now permeates our politics. It is not just common, but increasingly fashionable, to make a show of singling out disfavored groups, and in the eyes of partisan opponents, to show them their place.

Liberal Currents: YIMBYism for Colleges

Author: Nick Felker

Pull Quote: We need to say “Yes in my backyard”, not just for housing but for education. If we really believe that college is good, we should be investing not just in existing students but in expanding to more. We need to ensure that costs remain affordable and not burdening those just starting in their careers.

Priced Out UK: Community Land Auctions

Author: Freddie Poser

Pull Quote: With the power to run these auctions, local authorities could capture much more of the land value uplift associated with granting planning permissions by effectively auctioning them off. This is money they could use to fund vital local services and to make sure that the wider community benefits when it hosts new development. Land value capture is a ‘holy grail’ for many housing campaigners, which is why so many…support Community Land Auctions, even if they might disagree with the Government more generally.

Newsweek: Federal Action on Housing Affordability is Past Due

Author: Elijah Gullett

Pull Quote: The bounds of the housing affordability issue now far exceed city limits. America’s inability to build new housing is stifling economic and creating hardship for American families. To meaningfully address the housing affordability issue, federal “carrots” and “sticks” are needed to encourage cities across the U.S. to update their laws…
