A right to housing is not just symbolic. When we amend the California constitution to assert the legal right to housing, it obligates state and local governments to respect, protect and fulfill this right for its people. This means the government must work progressively to build and preserve affordable housing, as well as pass policies to ensure everyone in California has access to secure, healthy housing. It means that the government’s need to build dramatically more affordable housing would no longer be just a goal, but a constitutional obligation.
