Right now, one in four Illinoisans lives in a food desert.

Food deserts occur when residents in a community don’t have access to healthy, affordable fresh food. And here in Illinois, these food deserts are occurring across the state, in both our urban and rural communities. Leaders in Illinois know our communities deserve better, and they’re not only raising awareness in our government, but they’re actively pursuing solutions to eliminate food deserts no matter your zip code.

Just last week, Nikki and fellow Illinois Congressman Jonathan Jackson penned a letter to the U.S. Department of Agriculture to ask for increased funding for our healthy food security programs to ensure every family has access to quality food choices.

Nikki continues to be on the frontlines, fighting for each Illinoisan every day that she’s in office. It’s so important to her that Illinoisans don’t just have a voice in Congress, but have someone who will always fight to improve the quality of life of those she represents. Nikki didn’t just stop at alerting our government officials of this growing problem – she’s also leading the charge for change in the halls of Congress. She stands as co-sponsor for the Food Deserts Act, a bill that would provide USDA funding to states to ensure affordable, healthy food is available for every family. She’s also fighting to ensure our nation’s budget includes full funding for programs like the Healthy Food Financing Initiative, which not only improves healthy food options but helps create and preserve jobs in underserved communities.

Once again, Nikki is proving that no task is too daunting – and when it comes to standing up for Illinoisans, she’s always all-in. But she’s in one of the most competitive seats in the entire country, and Republicans are already working to ensure they flip this seat red in 2024.
