Hi there,

As much as we love to celebrate a shattered glass ceiling, this particular story isn’t sitting right with us.

Last week, Elon Musk announced he’d be stepping down as CEO of Twitter and has since named his replacement – someone who, according to AP News, Musk called “foolish enough” to want the job: Linda Yaccarino.

As a highly-regarded advertising executive, Yaccarino has an incredible resume and, in a normal situation, would probably make a terrific CEO. But Musk has caused so much destruction to the platform and is handing over a business in complete disarray. He laid off 80% of the staff, scared away advertisers, and destroyed public trust – leaving Linda to pick up the pieces.

Here’s why this matters: This situation isn’t uncommon. In fact, it has a name: the “glass cliff” theory. According to the article in AP News, “Women — as well as underrepresented minorities — are more likely to be hired for leadership jobs when there’s a crisis, which sets them up for failure.” They’re also more prone to taking on these undesirable roles as they are presented with fewer such opportunities than their male counterparts.

Of 340 CEOs of S&P 500 companies included in a recent survey, only 18 were women.

According to a Harvard Business Review report, the glass cliff theory holds up in business as well as politics. However, the in-depth research suggested that “as people become more used to seeing women at the highest levels of management, female leaders won’t be selected primarily for risky turnarounds—and will get more chances to run organizations [or government offices] that have good odds of continued success.”

THIS ^ is why Her Bold Move exists. We are fighting hard to ensure that more and more women can serve in leadership positions within our government – to help Americans get used to the idea of women calling the shots.

We are working to shape the country we want to live in.

As women’s rights are increasingly being stripped away in our country – and it is truly becoming a dangerous time to be a woman in America – we NEED more women in ALL of the rooms where decisions are being made (and not to clean up messes caused by their male predecessors). Help us continue to elect pro-choice women up and down the ballot – to break glass ceilings instead of falling off glass cliffs – by donating $15 now →
