Hi John xxxxxx,
As much as we love to celebrate a shattered glass ceiling, this particular story isn’t sitting right with us.
Last week, Elon Musk announced he’d be stepping down as CEO of Twitter and has since named his replacement – someone who, according to AP News, Musk called “foolish enough” to want the job: Linda Yaccarino.
As a highly-regarded advertising executive, Yaccarino has an incredible resume and, in a normal situation, would probably make a terrific CEO. But Musk has caused so much destruction to the platform and is handing over a business in complete disarray. He laid off 80% of the staff, scared away advertisers, and destroyed public trust – leaving Linda to pick up the pieces.
Here’s why this matters: This situation isn’t uncommon. In fact, it has a name: the “glass cliff” theory. According to the article in AP News, “Women — as well as underrepresented minorities — are more likely to be hired for leadership jobs when there’s a crisis, which sets them up for failure.” They’re also more prone to taking on these undesirable roles as they are presented with fewer such opportunities than their male counterparts. |
