LCA & ALW Expose Unlicensed S. Korean Auction House Selling Dogs for Consumption
Dear John,
On Wednesday, July 31, 2019, LCA's S. Korean sister organization Animal Liberation Wave (ALW) exposed an unlicensed auction house in S. Korea that sells dogs for consumption.
With the assistance of JTBC—a leading S. Korean newscast—activists documented how dogs are loaded, transported by truck, and then auctioned out to be slaughtered.

Since last winter, ALW has been investigating the facility, uncovering dogs kept in horrific, squalid conditions without food, water, or medical treatment until the days of the auction—which occur three times per week, year-round.
These types of auction houses are hidden from the public's and government's eye—acting as the middleman between dog meat farms and consumers—and are able to operate due to a legal loophole. S. Korea's Animal Protection Act explicitly indicates operators selling companion dogs must have a valid license and be inspected by the authorities; however, there are no safeguards in place for dogs that are considered "livestock" and slaughtered for consumption.
In order to unify the conflicting status of dogs, which are viewed in S. Korea as both "companion animals" and "livestock", the S. Korean government must pass MP Pyo Chang-won's proposed amendment to the Animal Protection Act—which would outlaw the slaughter of dogs and cats for meat.
