Today was a crucial test for our democracy, and our representatives failed us. For weeks now, the talking heads have repeatedly said the Senate was “expected to acquit Trump.”

Expected? No. Our Constitutional Democracy is only as strong as those who uphold it, and we cannot afford to be diminished by those who have sworn to uphold it.

Impartial justice and Constitutional justice failed today. These senators had a constitutional duty, and they chose loyalty to Trump. Full stop.
The blame isn’t only on Republicans. It was the House Democratic leadership who failed to prosecute Trump’s most egregious crimes. Where is the impeachment over concentration camps on the border? Where is the impeachment over Trump profiting off the presidency through his hotel properties?

Even with evidence of impeachable offenses before them, there were Democrats in the House who ignored clear evidence of the president’s guilt and voted against the articles.

And today in the Senate, nearly every Republican voted to acquit the president on both charges, including three being challenged by Brand New Congress.

For far too long the media and political parties have led us to believe we only have two choices: Republican or Democrat. The parties have demanded blind loyalty to the party line to maintain power. The norm is to expect representatives to vote down the party line and even demonize them when they don’t. We can change that with a Brand New Congress.

Those in power have created a system designed to undermine primaries, subvert voting and empower an oligarchy.
We need leaders who will stand up to the party when the party is wrong and fight for the right thing because it is the right thing to do.

In 2020, we have a choice. We can continue to support blind party loyalists, or we can elect people who will do the right thing.

We can elect people who sell out to the highest bidder, or we can elect people who can’t be bought.

We can elect regular working people to represent our communities and stand up to the powerful -- if we have the courage to fight alongside them.
