Don’t miss our big campaign launch! RSVP now for our [ [link removed] ]LIVE Freedom from
Medical Debt Town Hall with US Rep. Ro Khanna and our patient advocates —
this Monday, May 8th at 8:30 pm ET/5:30 PT!

We’ll also talk to Berneta Haynes of the National Consumer Law Center to
dig into the systemic solutions that Congress and the White House have the
power to enact right now.

Join us to hear stories from brave patients and OR members speaking out,
and strategize with us to take on price-gouging hospitals, predatory debt
collectors, and others who perpetuate this sick system.

We are organizing an outside coalition to work with Bernie Sanders, Ro
Khanna, and other allies in the fight for Medicare for All and declare
Freedom from Medical Debt.

The Problem: American hospitals price-gouge patients, fail to inform them
about financial aid options, and then when they can’t pay the exorbitant
bills, resort to predatory collections practices.

Medical debt forces many Americans to cut back on food and put their life
on credit cards. It’s the #1 cause of bankruptcy, but it doesn’t just
drain bank accounts. Lives are cut short when people put off care for fear
of debt.

Here are just some of the root-cause solutions our coalition is organizing
for on the ground and inside the halls of power:
— End patient price-gouging
— Guarantee the right to free care and financial assistance
— Stop predatory collections practices

Here’s what some of our patient advocates have said:

“I’m 72 and now live with my daughter after losing everything because of
medical bills. I had $250K saved up for retirement and then disaster hit -
several bouts of cancer and a stroke in 2009.” - D’Anne M., AZ

“In 2010, I was hit by a car on my bike. I barely survived, had a brain
injury, my hand amputated and reattached — costing nearly $1 million. Even
with insurance, some of that went on credit cards. Now, instead of paying
it down, I’m incurring more costs for pain treatments that aren’t covered.
It’s a vicious cycle.” - Kristin N., Washington

“I wouldn't owe anything if hospitals didn't gouge patients. The cost of
an MRI in the hospital was 8x the cost of an outpatient MRI and 80x
outsourced MRIs. I owe over $8000.” - Mary W., Texas

Our Revolution-endorsed Carlos Perkins is headed to the Indianapolis City
Council after a grassroots campaign of knocking doors and connecting with
voters on issues of public safety, mental healthcare, good living wage
jobs, and environmental justice.

Carlos adds to the number of mayors we’re electing to build local
progressive power in cities across the country. Last month, we put Brandon
Johnson at the helm in Chicago and next we plan to elect Helen Gym as
Mayor of Philadelphia!
