Hey folks — you’ve probably heard the phrase “debt ceiling” thrown around a lot. Here’s what’s going on:

Just like you and me, Congress has bills to pay. But when it’s time to write the checks, the process looks a little different for us — Democrats and Republicans in both chambers come together and pass legislation that helps us pay what we owe.

If we fail to pay our bills — or default on our national debt — the consequences would be huge . That’s why Republicans and Democrats have always worked in a bipartisan way to ensure that this never happens.

Until now.

Instead of working together with Democrats, House Republicans passed a bill with zero Democratic votes that would slash Social Security and Medicare benefits, make severe cuts to veterans’ health care, eliminate green energy initiatives from the Inflation Reduction Act , and take away food assistance for hundreds of thousands of vulnerable Americans.
