You’ve probably heard a lot about the debt ceiling. Here’s what’s going on.

Hey folks — you’ve probably heard the phrase “debt ceiling” thrown around a lot. Here’s what’s going on:

Just like you and me, Congress has bills to pay. But when it’s time to write the checks, the process looks a little different for us — Democrats and Republicans in both chambers come together and pass legislation that helps us pay what we owe.

If we fail to pay our bills — or default on our national debt — the consequences would be huge. That’s why Republicans and Democrats have always worked in a bipartisan way to ensure that this never happens.

Until now.

Instead of working together with Democrats, House Republicans passed a bill with zero Democratic votes that would slash Social Security and Medicare benefits, make severe cuts to veterans’ health care, eliminate green energy initiatives from the Inflation Reduction Act, and take away food assistance for hundreds of thousands of vulnerable Americans.

It’s an unacceptable political stunt, and we’re calling on them to end it. Will you add your name to our petition to demand that House Republicans stop playing games and put Americans first — not their own agenda?

Thanks for adding your voice alongside ours today.
