Weekend Reading
Dear John,
Over the past year, the war in Ukraine has displaced millions of people. As humanitarian need continues to grow, AFSC is partnering with local groups in Europe to fund essential work. Together we are assisting internally displaced people as well as refugees in Poland, Hungary, Czechia, and Estonia. Our efforts include distributing food, providing temporary housing, and other vital aid. Read more from AFSC’s Kerri Kennedy. [link removed]
Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:
Tell Congress: Pass the Peace on the Korean Peninsula Act!: [link removed] This week, President Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced a new agreement on U.S.-ROK military cooperation. But expanding military posturing does not make us all safer. Instead, U.S. leaders must move us toward lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula, including negotiating a binding peace agreement with North Korea to formally end the Korean War. This is a crucial step toward nuclear disarmament and would help to reunite thousands of families—including many Korean Americans—who have been separated for decades. Contact Congress today.
Video: Working toward decolonization in Guatemala: [link removed] In Chimaltenango, Guatemala, staff from local organizations came together to reflect on their shared experiences of colonialism—and how these harmful practices could be deconstructed. “It is important for us to generate awareness of those ideas which still reproduce social problems today,” said one participant. Watch the video to hear from more participants and AFSC staff.
Last chance: Speak out to get free school meals to more children!: [link removed] Under USDA guidelines, school boards can provide free meals to all students in schools where 40% or more are considered low income. Now the USDA is proposing to lower that threshold to 25% to expand free school meals to millions of children. The public has until May 8 to submit comments to the federal government—so speak out today to show your support for the change. Note: Comments must be unique to be considered. Add your comment today. Keeping military weapons out of policing: [link removed] In California, activists are organizing and advocating to stop police from using lethal robots, armored vehicles, and other military equipment in local communities. With support from AFSC, they’re succeeding in cities throughout the state. Read more from AFSC’s Jennifer Tu and John Lindsay-Poland.
Happy 106th birthday to AFSC!: [link removed] When the U.S. entered World War I in April 1917, young pacifists needed ways to serve their country nonviolently. That led to the creation of AFSC. Since 1917, we have been on the forefront of some of the most important social movements in working for a more just, peaceful world. Check out our timeline to explore some of the major events in our history.
Be well and take care
