Happy Birthday, Coretta Scott King!!
Alliance San Diego honors Coretta Scott King, a human rights champion who extended the work of her late husband, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Their combined legacy continues to be felt throughout the country. They inspire us to fight for the human rights of everyone in this country.
Coretta Scott King once said, “Freedom and justice cannot be parceled out in pieces to suit political convenience. I don’t believe you can stand for freedom for one group of people and deny it to others.” She was right. The promise of this country, as envisioned in the Declaration of Independence, is that all of us are created equal, endowed with rights, among them the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Together we can forge a path forward to build a truly inclusive democracy.

Alliance San Diego is embarking on a journey to elevate, claim and protect human rights. Dr. King once said, “Now is the time to lift our national policy from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of human dignity.” — which is precisely what Alliance San Diego is working to do. We are working to bring human rights home and recognize all of our human dignity.
From the inception of this country, oppressed people — Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), as well LGBTQ+ people, women, immigrants, and people whose status has led to their treatment as less than — have been fighting for recognition of our human rights, which has led to constitutional amendments, legislation, and litigation. Though we’ve made progress, we have miles to go.
The United States falls short of the international human rights standards articulated by the world of nations. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King were visible champions for human rights, each in their own way. They fought to make our democracy more equitable and just, and they advanced a vision for the future where the “beloved community” could be manifested.
It is because of their vision and efforts that Alliance San Diego and the broader movement is able to carry the baton forward. We welcome you to join our upcoming Human Dignity Campaign — an intentional endeavor to elevate, claim and protect dignity. We invite all of our supporters to reflect and share your thoughts with us around the following question:
What does “ human dignity " mean to you? [[link removed]]
