Alliance San Diego is embarking on a journey to elevate, claim and protect human rights. Dr. King once said, “Now is the time to lift our national policy from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of human dignity.” — which is precisely what Alliance San Diego is working to do. We are working to bring human rights home and recognize all of our human dignity.
From the inception of this country, oppressed people — Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), as well LGBTQ+ people, women, immigrants, and people whose status has led to their treatment as less than — have been fighting for recognition of our human rights, which has led to constitutional amendments, legislation, and litigation. Though we’ve made progress, we have miles to go.
The United States falls short of the international human rights standards articulated by the world of nations. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King were visible champions for human rights, each in their own way. They fought to make our democracy more equitable and just, and they advanced a vision for the future where the “beloved community” could be manifested.
It is because of their vision and efforts that Alliance San Diego and the broader movement is able to carry the baton forward.
