It’s been a little over a year since President Joe Biden—the author of the original Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)—signed the VAWA reauthorization into law.
This is an important milestone, but there is still much work to do to create change in our society to strengthen and expand protections for women and girls.

When the U.S. Senate failed to reauthorize VAWA in 2019, NOW and our members began a pressure campaign. Commitment from supporters like you and our allies and activists across the country have helped to strengthen VAWA with expanded protections for women and enhanced funding for local programs providing services for transgender people and underserved communities. Tribal authorities were recognized with an improved ability to prevent and prosecute unprecedented violent acts against Indigenous women.
But our work together is far from over.
We know there are powerful forces, like the gun lobby and their allies in Congress, that want to weaken VAWA and allow perpetrators of intimate partner violence to own firearms, escalating the risk of injury or death for women and children.
