John,

This year marks the 20th year since ICE began operating. For 20 years, deportation has been a constant looming threat in New York state, cruelly tearing apart families. The collaboration between ICE and New York police and state agencies has exacerbated this, causing immigrants in New York to fear any minor interaction with local law enforcement.

That is why we are in Albany today, to demand the passage of the New York for All Act.

WHAT IS THE NEW YORK FOR ALL ACT?

The New York for All Act would broadly prohibit state and local officers from enforcing federal immigration laws, funneling people into ICE custody, and deportation proceedings. Without the passage of the Act, families remain at risk of being torn apart, undermining the social and economic well-being of immigrant communities across the state.

WHY NOW?

Right now, law enforcement can call ICE if they suspect someone is not a legal citizen in any circumstance they deem appropriate, regardless of the person having proper documentation explaining their current status. This has resulted in countless families being separated for the past 20 years.

Dalila and her family are one of many cases impacted by this cruel separation. Dalila was pulled over for a driving violation and ended up detained by ICE overnight due to her immigration status. Her two young children were left in the care of a family member, terrified they might never see her again. Listen to her testimony on why it’s critical our leaders pass the New York for All Act:

No family should have to worry about being separated from their children while trying to live their lives. New York City already prohibits local law enforcement collaboration with ICE — it’s time the rest of New York State did too.

Join us as we fight for New York for All today and this year!
In solidarity,
