The Washington Post reported that last weekend, Cleta Mitchell, a top Republican legal strategist, told a room of GOP donors that they must limit voting on college campuses, restrict same-day voter registration and stop automatic mail-in voting. Here are some updates from today and yesterday.

Today, New York’s Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) voted 9-1 to pass a new state Assembly map. The IRC had until April 28 to reconvene and pass a new Assembly map after the previous one was struck down for being enacted through an unconstitutional process. The new map will now go to the Legislature for approval. [link removed]

Yesterday, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly (D) vetoed a bill that would have shortened the deadline to return absentee ballots by three days. While the Kansas Legislature has a GOP supermajority, they've struggled to overcome vetoes in the past. [link removed]

Also yesterday, a Florida House committee approved a resolution to raise the threshold to pass a citizen-led constitutional amendment from 60% to an unprecedented 66.67% of the vote. In 2018, over 64% of Floridians voted in favor of restoring voting rights for most people with past felony convictions upon release from incarceration. [link removed]
