Here’s the news story of the day you don’t want to miss. |
The Washington Post reported that last weekend, Cleta Mitchell, a top Republican legal strategist, told a room of GOP donors that they must limit voting on college campuses, restrict same-day voter registration and stop automatic mail-in voting. Here are some updates from today and yesterday. |
Today, New York’s Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) voted 9-1 to pass a new state Assembly map. The IRC had until April 28 to reconvene and pass a new Assembly map after the previous one was struck down for being enacted through an unconstitutional process. The new map will now go to the Legislature for approval.

Yesterday, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly (D) vetoed a bill that would have shortened the deadline to return absentee ballots by three days. While the Kansas Legislature has a GOP supermajority, they've struggled to overcome vetoes in the past.
|
Also yesterday, a Florida House committee approved a resolution to raise the threshold to pass a citizen-led constitutional amendment from 60% to an unprecedented 66.67% of the vote. In 2018, over 64% of Floridians voted in favor of restoring voting rights for most people with past felony convictions upon release from incarceration.
