Notably, research from the Annie E Casey Foundation found that, “… those who do not read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to leave school without a diploma than proficient readers.” And given these existing literacy challenges, the COVID-19 pandemic made the learning slope exponentially steeper. The Foundation is requesting proposals to support projects that focus on boosting the literacy skills of elementary school-aged youth of color and English language learners in communities with at least one Title 1 school.
