Research findings prior to the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrate how literacy proficiency is inextricably tied to high school graduation rates. Notably, research from the Annie E Casey Foundation found that, “… those who do not read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to leave school without a diploma than proficient readers.” And given these existing literacy challenges, the COVID-19 pandemic made the learning slope exponentially steeper.

The Foundation is requesting proposals to support projects that focus on boosting the literacy skills of elementary school-aged youth of color and English language learners in communities with at least one Title 1 school.  The deadline to apply is Thursday, June 1, 2023 at 5:00 EST or until the limited pool of resources is exhausted.
