In this week's edition, I discuss the basics of how to listen to someone, a now often-ignored skill. I talk with Rav Arora about the necessary distinction between political and religious beliefs, and I revisit a question I was asked on tour about childhood behavior disorders.
Advice
How to Listen to Others
Carl Rogers’s rule was, when you are listening to someone, do not assume that either you or they know what they are talking about or what they are going to say. Because people think by talking, so you have to give them a chance to get it all out before you jump on it because they might change their own mind in midstream. That is important. Let them formulate the problem before you jump in with the criticism.
But then the next thing is – and I really love this and I think it is really useful – that once the person has laid out their story, you get to say, “This is what I heard you say. Do you agree with my formulation?” That stops the listener. First of all, it indicates to the speaker that the listener actually listened. Or if there is an error, then the speaker can say, “No, that is not what I meant at all.” And then there can be some clarification. But it also forces the listener not to turn the speaker into a straw man.
It is not only that I have to summarize what you said, but I also have to summarize what you said in a way that you agree with.
