Hello,

In this week's edition, I discuss the basics of how to listen to someone, a now often-ignored skill. I talk with Rav Arora about the necessary distinction between political and religious beliefs, and I revisit a question I was asked on tour about childhood behavior disorders.

How to Listen to Others

Carl Rogers’s rule was, when you are listening to someone, do not assume that either you or they know what they are talking about or what they are going to say. Because people think by talking, so you have to give them a chance to get it all out before you jump on it because they might change their own mind in midstream. That is important. Let them formulate the problem before you jump in with the criticism.

But then the next thing is – and I really love this and I think it is really useful – that once the person has laid out their story, you get to say, “This is what I heard you say. Do you agree with my formulation?” That stops the listener. First of all, it indicates to the speaker that the listener actually listened. Or if there is an error, then the speaker can say, “No, that is not what I meant at all.” And then there can be some clarification. But it also forces the listener not to turn the speaker into a straw man.

It is not only that I have to summarize what you said, but I also have to summarize what you said in a way that you agree with.

Introduction To The Idea Of God

Let’s take a look at the structure of the book itself. The first thing about the Bible is that it is a comedy. And a comedy has a happy ending. That is a strange thing because the Greek gods’ stories were almost always tragic. But the Bible is a comedy. It has a happy ending. Everyone lives.

Tyranny Through Weaponizing Bureaucracy | Dr. Scott Jenson | EP 349

Dr. Scott Jenson and I walk through his accomplished professional life in family medicine, as well as his successful run as a Minnesota senator, all before having his reputation in both fields dismantled for what may be purely political reasons. Six investigations across nearly five years and numerous allegations without cohesion, proof, or relation have amounted to nothing, save for the clarification of Dr. Jensen's newest goal: to take on the medical board that had no justification for its actions. Given the parallels between Dr. Jenson and my experiences, this interview was not only inevitable but paramount.

From The Archives

Recently on my tour, I was asked if I think there is a connection between child behavioral disorders and societal changes. My answer did not stop with childhood development; I also addressed adulthood.
