Margaret Chase Smith was often the only female senator in Congress. She lent her voice to a variety of issues, often focusing on foreign policy or military affairs. She courageously gave her "Declaration of Conscience" speech to the Senate in 1950, raising the concern about false accusations coming from the Red Scare sweeping the nation. Use
