Connecting Senator Margaret Chase Smith and Courage

Dear John,

Margaret Chase Smith was often the only female senator in Congress. She lent her voice to a variety of issues, often focusing on foreign policy or military affairs. She courageously gave her "Declaration of Conscience" speech to the Senate in 1950, raising the concern about false accusations coming from the Red Scare sweeping the nation. Use this lesson to help your students learn about Senator Smith and her courageous speech to fight for what she believed was right.
