Dear Friend,
** The theme of Women’s History Month this year is “celebrating women who tell our stories.”
------------------------------------------------------------
At Peace Over Violence, we are all about telling stories, celebrating stories, and uplifting the voices of women in our communities. From our founding days in 1971, POV has strived to be a storytelling agency, and we understand the power and responsibility that comes with that.
Speaking of stories, we are gearing up for our 24th annual Denim Day next month, which started from a story that came out of Italy in 1999. An Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing tight jeans, ruling and reasoning that because they were tight she must have helped her attacker remove them, implying consent. Women in Italian Parliament protested by wearing jeans the next day. Patti Giggans saw this in Los Angeles and was inspired to develop Denim Day, now the longest running sexual violence prevention education campaign in history. Learn more about Denim Day here. ** Denim Day is Wednesday, April 26th
------------------------------------------------------------
Denim Day is all about spreading awareness around sexual violence issues, supporting survivors, and educating ourselves and others. This year's themes are Let's Protect Each Other, Be An Ally, and Be An Upstander.
Let’s protect each other. Let’s protect ourselves and each other, support one another and create a better and safer world. Be an upstander. Stand up and take action safely. If you see something, say something, do something. Be an ally. Join together in the movement to end violence. Sexual violence is intersectional; we must recognize and acknowledge the interconnectedness of so many violences, along with social justice and public health issues.

** Failed oversight, lax punishments: How the Coast Guard has allowed sexual assault at sea to go unchecked ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
By Blake Ellis and Melanie Hicken
CNN — Hundreds of pages of the Coast Guard’s own records, as well as interviews with shipping company and union officials, current and former government employees and dozens of mariners, show that the Coast Guard has failed to use its power to prevent and punish sexual assault and misconduct for decades — despite growing evidence that this kind of behavior is a longstanding problem at sea.
