This massive seaweed bloom has major concerns for both human and aquatic life. When sargassum decomposes, it sucks oxygen out of the water, which creates "dead zones" in typical nursery habitats like mangrove forests, coral reefs, and seagrass beds. As the seaweed rots on the beach, it releases hydrogen sulfide – a toxin that causes respiratory problems.Sargassum also contains arsenic, so it can’t be eaten or used as fertilizer. And if it isn’t cleaned up properly, that arsenic can leach into drinking water.
Like many classic horror thrillers, this menace is by our own design. The reason is simple: rising global temperatures due to climate change are already creating never-before-seen oceanic phenomena that pose real threats to health effects for our oceans and ourselves.
