Hi friend,

100 years ago, California’s referendum system was created as a check-and-balance against the power of big corporations that could afford to buy influence in the legislature.

But bad actors like tobacco corporations and Big Oil have still found ways to abuse that same system, spending tens of millions of dollars to outright lie to voters and undermine the democratic process.

So you can imagine how excited the EnviroVoters team was when Assemblymember Isaac Bryan introduced the brand new Referendum Accountability Act of 2023 (AB 421)!

AB 421 would require paid signature gatherers, voter guides, and even your voting ballot to disclose the top three true funders of a ballot measure.

Friend, can you sign our petition in support of the Referendum Accountability Act?

If AB 421 is passed, when Chevron tries to use the referendum system to overturn legislation preventing oil drilling near schools and homes, voters can cut past the lies and deception to see which corporate interests are pulling the strings.

And that isn't a hypothetical. Just last year, SB 1137 was signed into law, banning new oil wells within 3,200 feet of schools, homes, and daycares.

And fossil fuel polluters immediately went to work to overturn this landmark bill, spending big on paid signature gatherers and outright lying to voters about what they were gathering signatures for.

This isn’t the first time wealthy corporations have tried to buy the laws they want when our democracy prioritizes people over polluters. By passing AB 421, we can make sure it’s the last time they can spend big to deceive California voters while hiding behind lies and fake campaign names.

By signing our petition, you’re joining EnviroVoters across the state and country to stand up for a democratic system that works for ordinary Californians, not Big Oil and other corporate polluters. Can we count on you?

As always, thank you for being an Environmental Voter.
