*Governor Whitmer Makes Appointment to the Bench*  

 

*LANSING, Mich. —* Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the appointment of Andrew Kowalkowski to the 44th District Court – Royal Oak and Berkley.  

 

“Andrew will serve the people of Royal Oak and Berkley admirably,” said *Governor Whitmer*. “He brings a wealth of legal experience to the bench, and I confident that he will uphold the rule of law and serve his community by ensuring equal justice for all.”

Andrew Kowalkowski is currently an Administrative Law Examiner with the Michigan Department of State where he presides over administrative law hearings related to the regulatory authority of the Michigan Department of State. Before this, he was an associate attorney at The Barone Defense Firm and Pierce, Farrell, Tafelski and Wells PLC, and he also had his own general practice firm where he concentrated on criminal defense, drunk driving litigation, license restoration, implied consent, license appeals, and family law. 

  

Mr. Kowalkowski earned his bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and juris doctorate from Wayne State University Law School. He is a member of the Polish American Legal Society and the Michigan Association for Justice. 

  

“I am honored and humbled to be appointed to the 44th District Court bench by Governor Whitmer,” said *Andrew Kowalkowski*. “I look forward to continuing my civil service, now in the community that my family calls home.  I promise to oversee a fair and equitable courtroom, ensuring equal access to justice for all who seek it.” 

   

This appointment was made to fill a partial term following the passing of Judge Jamie Wittenberg. Mr. Kowalkowski’s term will commence on April 24, 2023 and expire at twelve o’clock noon on January 1, 2025. If Mr. Kowalkowski wishes to serve the remainder of Judge Wittenberg’s term, expiring January 1, 2029, he would be required to run for reelection in November of 2024. 

  

Judicial appointments are not subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
