The March 2023 issue of Health Affairs focused on public health during the COVID-19 pandemic and contained
nearly a dozen studies examining lessons learned and topics such as the relationship between public health and medical care and infrastructure needs ranging from personnel to laboratories to financing, and more. One paper in particular calls for a closer look at an alarming trend in the public health workforce.
Their findings–that about half the workforce left their jobs during that period, with higher rates for younger and less experienced workers–serve as a wakeup call for policy
makers on the need to prioritize workforce recruitment and retention before the next public health emergency. During National Public Health Week, we invite you to join Health Affairs Editor-in-Chief Alan Weil, authors from the study, and leaders of state and
local health departments for a discussion of the findings and what must be done to forestall a crisis in America’s public health workforce.
