Congressional bill, H.R. 1, is a massive giveaway that puts polluter profits over people: [link removed]
***********************************************************
Dear Friend,
In the face of devastating hurricanes, wildfires, and floods that have cost billions of dollars and real human lives, House Republicans have introduced their number one legislative priority (H.R. 1) which aims to silence community voices, shield decisions on energy and infrastructure projects from public scrutiny, expand fossil fuel development on public lands, eliminate government accountability, and codify climate denial. They’re also trying to repeal important investments in the Inflation Reduction Act that would help us fight climate change.
We need you to send a message to your House Representative urging them to vote NO on this bill, H.R. 1.
If signed into law, this Republican proposal would ensure the federal government prioritizes private profit over the public interest. It would fast-track more fossil fuel projects, streamline permits for dirty mining, and open up more of our public lands to extractive industries. By gutting important environmental protections, billions of taxpayer dollars would be spent to build projects without any disclosure or meaningful engagement with impacted communities. Fossil fuel projects would be rubber-stamped and critical infrastructure would be built without any consideration of resiliency or the impacts of rising seas, increased drought, and more extreme weather. Communities most impacted by these projects would have few opportunities to voice their concerns.
This is a polluter giveaway at the public’s expense, and we need to make sure it does not make it through Congress.
This bill is set out to eviscerate landmark environmental laws like the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), and the people’s environmental law: the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). At its core, NEPA is about ensuring federal decisions are democratic by guaranteeing meaningful public input, transparency, and accountability in federal decisions. For the past fifty years NEPA has been around, it has achieved its stated goal of improving the quality of the human environment by relying on sound science to reduce and mitigate harmful impacts. NEPA is an absolute essential tool for a swift, just, and equitable transition to a clean energy economy.
You have helped us fight off Republican attempts to gut NEPA and we need your voice again. Please take a moment to write to your Congressional representative and tell them to reject H.R. 1.
Sincerely,
Raul Garcia
Legislative Director,
Healthy Communities
