Last month, anti-abortion activists sued to break up Ground Game Texas’s Justice Charter, a groundbreaking initiative that would, among other policies, decriminalize abortion in San Antonio—the first initiative of its kind in Texas since Roe was overturned.

Despite their flawed case, criminally-indicted Attorney General Ken Paxton joined their suit—filing an amicus brief in support of the effort to block our initiative.

But guess what? We won. Last week the Texas Supreme Court sided with Ground Game Texas, allowing San Antonians to vote on the initiative this May.

It’s not everyday that you defeat the state Attorney General in the state Supreme Court. But the work is far from over—now we have to pass this initiative. Team, let’s back up a bit to explain what this initiative is all about.

The San Antonio Justice Charter is a groundbreaking initiative to improve public safety in San Antonio. It would decriminalize abortion and marijuana, preventing police resources from being used to harass Texans for abortion care or marijuana possession.

It would also reform police practices, ending the use of so-called “no-knock” warrants and chokeholds that have killed far too many. It would also encourage the use of citations instead of arrests for low-level nonviolent crimes.

This is a commonsense initiative to improve public safety. But that didn’t stop radical anti-abortion activists or their ally Ken Paxton from trying to stop it. We defeated them in the courts—now we have to defeat them at the ballot box.
