Right now, a record 350 million people across 79 countries are suffering
from severe hunger, and the situation is expected to worsen — exacerbated
by war in Ukraine — with global food supplies projected to drop to a
three-year low.

Mercy Corps is responding to this global hunger crisis — both by providing
immediate relief, and by helping communities address the root causes
preventing them from growing or buying food in the first place.

More than 8.3 million people, roughly half of Somalia’s population, are
hungry — making it among the world’s most food insecure countries. A child
is admitted to a health care facility every single minute of every day,
due to malnutrition and related complications.

On my trip to Somalia, I met with team members and program participants
about the challenges they’re facing as a result of historic drought and
global food shortages.

At least two million people have been displaced from their homes and must
make long treks to urban areas to seek help. After their difficult
journey, many people are malnourished and in poor health. They seek
treatment, food, water, and shade from the hot sun in temporary shelters.

At a camp for displaced people in Baidoa, Somalia, I met with families who
had to flee their homes after their crops and livestock died, leaving them
with nothing to eat or sell.


In Somalia, we are providing emergency support to nearly 600,000 people.
We’re delivering clean drinking water for people and for their livestock,
hygiene kits to prevent disease spread, and cash assistance to help
families purchase food, medicine, and clothing.

As the global food crisis increases hunger in Somalia and all over the
world, our teams will continue to work around the clock to help families
