Jack, over the weekend we learned that after 68 years, the legendary progressive magazine, the Texas Observer, will cease its publication at the end of this week.
This is a big loss for progressive news media. Right-wing media dwarfs progressive outlets, with a huge reach and influence over the American population. Now more than ever, we cannot allow progressive, independent media to disappear. Please support Daily Kos by donating $5 today.

The Texas Oberver's business model was different from most other news media businesses. They didn't rely on advertising, in fact they didn't use advertising at all. They functioned as a non-profit organization relying on a handful of major donors.
It's no secret that media companies are struggling to make ends meet—including Daily Kos. However, unlike the Texas Observer, Daily Kos' survival isn't dependent on the whim of a few rich donors—our largest source of revenue is from tens of thousands of readers and activists donating what they can to help us make ends meet. This makes us accountable to our grassroots donors, rather than a billionaire backer that could use their purse strings to control what we said, corporate sponsors that come with their own agenda, or some big corporate conglomerate that only cares about the bottom line and shareholders returns.
Donations from the Daily Kos community are our largest and most reliable source of revenue. This is even more important right now because our other sources of income are lagging behind our projections. In hopes of closing this deficit, we have increased our March fundraising goal by $100,000. Daily Kos needs to raise $46,976 in the next few days.
Can you support progressive, independent news like Daily Kos by making a donation of $5 today?
