John,
As a child of immigrants, I know how painful it is to experience policies that make one feel less than. So I am angry to hear that the Biden administration is “considering reviving the practice of detaining migrant families,” according to the New York Times.
The people voted against racist and harmful immigration policies like family detention when they voted for President Biden. Biden ran on reversing Trump's inhumane policies, so this would be a huge betrayal.
According to the American Association of Pediatrics, “even short periods of detention can cause psychological trauma and long-term mental health risks for children.” We can’t let this happen.
Will you add your name right now and call on Joe Biden to not reinstate family detention for migrant families?
During Trump’s presidency, I visited immigrant detention centers in my state and on the U.S.-Mexico border. I met with people who came here because they wanted a better future for their children, like my parents did. And I’m still shaken to my core from the dehumanization I witnessed.
People come here for a better life, and they deserve a path to citizenship. They deserve freedom while working on their cases. Our immigrant neighbors deserve humane immigration reform, not Trump-era policies.
Unfortunately, earlier this year, the Biden administration announced new restrictions on immigration and set up more barriers for people who are desperately seeking asylum in the U.S. These harmful policies deport and expel people before they can even come here to seek hearings, and they violate the internationally-recognized human right to asylum.
Everyone fleeing danger has the right to seek safety. Policies to lock up or deport people who come here seeking a better life are moral failures that harm our communities.
Please sign to show President Biden that we won't be quiet if he moves forward with his plan to reinstate the horrific policy of imprisoning migrant families.
Thank you. Our country has the resources and the duty to take in asylum-seekers.
It is my duty as a Congresswoman to raise hell until immigrants seeking safety and a better life are treated with dignity and respect, with their human rights protected. And that includes the 11 million undocumented people who are already living across the U.S. as our neighbors.
In solidarity,
Rashida
