Dear John,
Ways and Means hearing on America's trade agenda
The Biden Admin’s lack of a substantive trade agenda is deeply troubling and we are missing opportunities to use trade as an offensive tool to strengthen our economy. At our Ways and Means Committee hearing, I pressed the US Trade Ambassador on our trade agenda in the Indo-Pacific region and ceding economic leadership to China. As one of the largest corn and soybean producing districts in the country, IL16 benefits greatly from trade and I will continue to advocate for a robust trade agenda.

Legislation to strengthen the protection of classified documents
Last week, I joined Rep. Mike Quigley today to introduce the Classified Documents Accountability Act to implement stronger enforcement for mishandling of classified documents. Any individual who handles classified material or documents is made aware of the safeguards, responsibility, and importance of protecting highly sensitive information, whether it’s high ranking government officials, Intelligence Committee members, or military officers. As a former state and federal prosecutor, I believe it has become clear that there must be reform and clearer penalties for individuals who mishandle classified information. Our bipartisan legislation will help better safeguard our nation and bring accountability to a vital process for our national security.

Reforming our surveillance programs to protect Americans and national security
I am proud to lead the House Intelligence Committee's FISA Working group to reform Section 702 to protect the civil liberties of Americans and protect our national security. FISA and Section 702 are necessary tools to protect our national security, but abuses have eroded faith and violated civil liberties. We will seek bipartisan solutions to reform these surveillance tools.

Supporting Alzheimer's research and caregivers
I’ve introduced a bipartisan bill to support families across the country dealing with Alzheimer’s disease. Our bill will support innovation for Alzheimer’s treatment and help patients, families, and caregivers through greater coordination of care.

Visiting with 16th District constituents
I had a great visit at the Ferrero plant in McLean County. Ferrero continues to make high-quality chocolate and products right here in Illinois. I appreciate all they do to support jobs and economic opportunities in central Illinois.
Stopped by Sorce Freshwater in East Peoria to tour their facility and discuss issues around Asian Carp. The Illinois River is an important resource for our region and we must work to protect it. I appreciate the work Sorce Freshwater and fishermen do in our community.
Thank you to the Kendall-Grundy Farm Bureau for hosting me during lunch! Ag is the #1 industry in Illinois, and I will continue to advocate for the Ag community on the Ways and Means Committee and in upcoming Farm Bill negotiations.
As always, thanks for subscribing to my newsletter!
Sincerely,
Darin LaHood Member of Congress
