Trump’s unhinged, all-caps post last Saturday on his knock-off social media platform calling for his supporters to protest and “TAKE OUR NATION BACK” was jarring enough, especially with the January 6th insurrection barely in our rearview mirror.

But then it got even worse. Enter Kevin McCarthy.

McCarthy had a clear choice to make: Join with rational adults in defending and upholding the rule of law, or join with Donald Trump in attacking our justice system, defaming the DA, and inciting riots. He chose poorly.

Now McCarthy says he wants Trump’s supporters to remain peaceful. But he’s talking out of both sides of his mouth. He’s feeding raw meat to the most dangerous groups and factions of Trump’s base — groups who are looking for any excuse to have another go at a January 6th and to replace the rule of law with the rule of Trump.

What happened to McCarthy’s moment of clarity just after the January 6th attack on the Capitol, when he said that Trump was responsible and McCarthy condemned the violence?

McCarthy's ambition happened. In his quest to become Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy traded away his conscience. And now we’re left with a dangerous enabler — controlled by Donald Trump — in charge of the House.
