John,

Ahead of #TransWeek, we want to give you some space to think about how this week and beyond we can each and all prioritize the safety, joy, and wellbeing of our transgender family in and beyond Virginia. This week focuses on centering our trans siblings and their joy, and ends with Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV) Friday March 31. I hope you’ll consider joining a TDOV event near you and celebrating all that it means to be trans.

As a trans person, I want to share with you a bit about trans week of visibility and action, and the context it takes place in this year. Trans people are under attack in Virginia. Our ability to exist in our own bodies is being policed and attacked through drag bans, trans athlete bans, and healthcare bans.  How are you investing in the safety, survival, and liberation of your trans community members?

We are often forced to focus on the disproportionate amounts of violence and harm targeted at trans people. but don't forget, there's so much trans joy. Equality Virginia is fighting to uplift and protect that most of all. Will you commit to helping build the future where that's real?

Trans folks deserve safety and solidarity, 365 days a year. No matter where we live in Virginia. We should and must focus on protecting trans and nonbinary people, our joy, our safety and our peace all year long. What seeds are you sowing now to ensure a future where it is more safe for your trans siblings to be seen this week and beyond?

To all of our trans siblings: We see you. We love you. We're in this fight with you.

Sincerely,

Addison Hunter (they/them)

Associate Director of Communications & Digital Engagement
