Legislative Breakfast Recap

Thank you to everyone who joined us last week at our Annual Legislative Breakfast! This was our first in person Legislative Breakfast event since the pandemic and we enjoyed having everyone gather to learn about the recent General Assembly session from the legislators who represent Arlington in Richmond. Arlington’s members of the Virginia Senate and House of Delegates discussed the legislation that they patroned, the issues that the General Assembly took up, and the outlook for Arlington and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Nick Minock, Political Reporter with WJLA/ABC7News, moderated the panel of legislators which consisted of Senators Adam Ebbin and Barbara Favola, and Delegates Patrick Hope and Alfonso Lopez. The legislators answered questions on a variety of topics, including transportation infrastructure, Arlington's office vacancy, and housing affordability.

Arlington Chamber Young Professionals Series: Community Engagement

Tuesday, March 28 | 9:00-10:30 a.m. | Crystal City Sports Pub

Our first event in our Arlington Chamber Young Professional Series will focus on Community Engagement. If you are a young professional looking for more ways to get involved in the community, this event will allow you to connect with the Chamber and learn more about our network of more than 100 nonprofit members. Attendees will also hear from the Chamber's Community Action Committee Chair, Megan Niewold from Arlington Community Federal Credit Union, who will share her work and experience as a young professional leader in the Arlington Chamber. After a Q&A session with Megan, attendees will have an opportunity to meet staff from local nonprofit members and participate in a volunteer fair.

We encourage our Chamber members to share this event with the young professionals in their network.

County Approves Expanded Housing Options

On March 22, the Arlington County Board voted 5-0 to approve Expanded Housing Options (EHOs) in zoning districts of the County that currently only allow for single detached homes. This concludes the multi-year Missing Middle Housing Study, which the Chamber had been involved in over the past few years.

The Zoning Ordinance allows for up to 6 units to be developed on a residential lot by right. This would include duplexes, townhouses, and multiplexes with 3-6 units. Lot coverage regulations, maximum building height, and minimum setbacks for these developments are the same as what currently exists for single detached homes. The development of expanded housing options will also be constrained by a cap of 58 units per year, with certain distribution requirements.

County Proposed FY 2024 Budget

The Arlington Chamber requests that the County keep the positions of Assistant Director in Arlington Economic Development, and Associate Planner in the Department of Community Planning, Housing and Development. Retaining the Assistant Director position at the Arlington Economic Development will ensure that they have the sufficient administrative resources to achieve its goals of attracting and retaining businesses in Arlington, which has long-term positive effects on taxes and our economic growth. Keeping the Associate Planner position will also mitigate delays as the Department moves forward in significant projects such as the Future of Outdoor Dining (FOOD) Study and Plan Langston Boulevard.

The next Public Budget Session is scheduled for Tuesday, March 28 at 7:00 p.m.
