The West Responds to Putin Placing Tactical Nuclear Bombs in Belarus

Politico: NATO criticized Moscow on Sunday for its “dangerous and irresponsible” nuclear rhetoric after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced he would deploy tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus. “NATO is vigilant, and we are closely monitoring the situation. We have not seen any changes in Russia’s nuclear posture that would lead us to adjust our own,” a spokesperson for the defense alliance said. The spokesperson criticized comments from Putin on Saturday that likened the deployment of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus to the U.S. stationing its nuclear arms in Europe as part of the NATO defense alliance (Politico). Associated Press: Russia has said the plan to station tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus comes in response to the West’s increasing military support for Ukraine. Putin announced the plan in a television interview that aired on Saturday, saying it was triggered by a U.K. decision this past week to provide Ukraine with armor-piercing rounds containing depleted uranium (Associated Press).

Athlete Riley Gaines Blasts ESPN for Highlighting Trans Swimmer During Women’s History Month
Daily Wire: Twelve-time All-American female swimmer Riley Gaines slammed ESPN for airing a segment promoting a biological male over the weekend in the network’s coverage of “Celebrating Women’s History Month.” “In 2022, swimmer Lia Thomas became the first transgender athlete to win an NCAA Division I Championship by winning the 500 Freestyle,” the segment said. “The Texas native competed for three seasons on the men’s swim team at the University of Pennsylvania” (Daily Wire). Last year, Biden nominated Denver International Airport CEO Phil Washington to serve as FAA administrator (Reuters).Daily Wire: North Carolina Republican Senator Ted Budd said, “The FAA can’t afford to be led by someone who needs on-the-job training.” Sen. Birth Control Pills Found to Significantly Increase Risk of Cancer
Daily Wire: Hormonal contraceptives come with an increased risk of breast cancer, according to a new study conducted by researchers from the University of Oxford. The study showed an increased risk of around 20-30% in breast cancer linked to current or even recent use of hormonal birth control pills, including combined oestrogen and progestogen birth control pills and progestagen-only contraceptives. The study’s abstract said the findings show that “current or recent use of progestagen-only contraceptives is associated with a slight increase in breast cancer risk,” which is “similar in magnitude to that associated with combined hormonal contraceptives.” Notably, progestagen-only contraceptive use has substantially increased in recent years (Daily Wire).

AOC Comes to TikTok’s Defense
Daily Wire: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D-NY) entered the debate about a nationwide ban on Chinese-owned social media app TikTok. The Democratic Socialist and member of the left-wing “Squad” took to TikTok on Saturday morning to push back against bipartisan support for a nationwide ban on the app. AOC minimized concerns about security and data privacy, saying that TikTok was just one app that harvests massive troves of data. Instead of banning a single app, she called for a broader data privacy law (Daily Wire). National Review: TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, is China-based, opening concerns that it would be required to comply with Chinese laws requiring companies to provide the CCP with access to user data and other proprietary information… ByteDance admitted to the surveillance after an internal investigation, which led to the firing of Chris Lepitak, the employee who oversaw the team responsible for the surveillance (National Review).

Democrats Eye 2024 Nervously as They are Secretive About Potential Replacements for the Executive Branch
Washington Examiner: As President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris prepare for a 2024 White House run, some Democrats are eyeing the field of alternatives. And while some Democratic donors privately say alternatives to a Biden-Harris ticket in 2024 exist and they have options, they are reluctant to out their purported targets. The dynamic hints at the scramble among some party malcontents to shore up potential alternatives in the event Biden chooses to step aside. There remains speculation over who could step into the breach if the need arises. Asked how these Democratic donors feel about Harris, this person responded, “They just stare at me.” Some Democrats nevertheless worry about 2024. The race would likely pit an octogenarian president and his low-polling vice president against a Republican field likely to include a GOP governor who notched record electoral margins in a battleground state last year, including in Democratic Miami-Dade County (Washington Examiner).

Honduras Sides with China After Loosening Ties with Taiwan
Reuters: China established diplomatic ties with Honduras on Sunday after the Central American country ended its decades-long relationship with Taiwan, while Taiwan’s foreign minister accused Honduras of demanding exorbitant sums before being lured away by Beijing. The ending of ties with Taiwan had been expected after the Honduran foreign minister travelled to China last week to open relations and President Xiomara Castro said her government would start ties with Beijing (Reuters). Associated Press: The diplomatic victory for China comes as tensions rise between Beijing and the United States, including over China’s increasing assertiveness toward self-ruled Taiwan, and signals growing Chinese influence in Latin America (Associated Press).

Nobody was fired or resigned because of the debacle. Bizpac: Images of the equipment, part of the reported $7 billion in abandoned U.S. taxpayer property, were released by the Taliban and are drawing attention on social media (Bizpac). Omri Ceren: Remember how Team Biden got journos to run interference for them and downplay what a catastrophe this was? “The Taliban won’t be able to use them.” “Where are they going to get spare parts?” “They already had some of these anyway.” Anything to get out of the news cycle (Twitter). Fernando Amandi Sr.: INCONCEIVABLE: Billions of dollars in operational US military equipment left behind by the Biden mis-administration’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan. Berlin Voters Reject Bid to Become Climate Neutral by 2030
Reuters: A referendum in Berlin on Sunday that would have bound the city to strive to be climate neutral by 2030 has failed, the city’s mayor Franziska Giffey said in a statement. The measure would have forced the new conservative local government to invest heavily in renewable energy, building efficiency and public transport. Had it passed, Berlin would have been one of the few major European cities with a legally binding goal to become carbon neutral in seven years (Reuters). Bloomberg: Germany, which emits the most carbon dioxide among European countries, has lagged on its emissions goals and was most recently thrown off track by the energy crisis following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine (Bloomberg).

Blockbuster Resurfaces in Cryptic Tweets, Active Website
CBS: Children of the 80s and 90s rejoiced this week when they realized a blast from the past may be creeping back into the zeitgeist: Blockbuster. The antiquated but still beloved movie rental retailer has a live website – even though the company ceased most of its operations in 2014. Some fans believe that is evidence the company is making a comeback. In a tweet this month, the company joked about reopening: “New business idea: We’re going to come back as a bank and use VHS and DVDs as currency. Time to go visit your mom.” The tweet was a joke, but three days later, Twitter users realized the Blockbuster website was active again. The message on the homepage: “We are working on rewinding your movie” (CBS).
