ACLU Supporter – Trump's impeachment trial is one of the most historic moments for the U.S. presidency – ever. Yet Senate leaders are blocking the press from having full access to the trial, which endangers the freedom of the press under the First Amendment and our right to know what the government is doing. This historic moment must be held in open view and subjected to the full scrutiny of a free and independent press. We must demand no less. Call your senators at (202) 224-3121 and demand that the Senate end its unprecedented press restrictions. The public should have a full, unobstructed view of this historic event. The Senate is limiting journalists from reporting on the impeachment trial by restricting video, banning electronics, and obstructing reporter access. Only government-run video cameras are permitted inside the chamber, which can obscure how our elected Senators are engaging – or not – in the process. ACLU Supporter, transparency and freedom of the press are essential pillars of our democracy. The public bore witness to Vietnam War hearings in 1966, to the Watergate hearings in 1973, and to President Bill Clinton's impeachment hearings in 1998. Just a year ago, we had full view of the State of the Union address in the U.S. Capitol. If there were ever a moment for us to bear witness and ensure full press access to a government proceeding, it's this impeachment trial. We must end the draconian press restrictions now and allow full access to the impeachment trial. CALL YOUR SENATORS AT (202) 224-3121. Thanks for taking action, Kate Oh |
