In Washington

Like many Americans, I was shocked to learn of the classified documents found at the Penn Biden Center earlier this year. Coupled with the university’s endowment investments in China, this raises national security questions we don't currently know the answers to. Right now, adversarial entities are contributing money to university endowments as part of the Chinese Communist Party’s infiltration of our colleges and universities. We need to know if these funds are being used to gain influence over America’s current and future leaders. That’s why House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith and I sent a letter to University of Pennsylvania President Mary Elizabeth Magill regarding the university's endowment investments in flagged foreign entities and its funding of the Penn Biden Center. The letter also reminds President Magill of the Ways and Means Committee's jurisdiction over the taxation of endowments. Be sure to read more about our letter by clicking here or on the image below.

It's not just our secondary education system I am worried about. In K-12 schools across the nation, children are being taught to hate our country, parents are labeled as domestic terrorists, and students’ grades are plummeting. That’s why Republicans passed H.R. 5 - the Parents Bill of Rights - this week. This bill gives parents the right to:

Know what their children are being taught.
Be heard, without being labeled terrorists.
To see where their taxpayer dollars are going in schools.
To protect their child’s privacy.
To know their child is safe at school.

There are over 89,000 veterans in Eastern North Carolina and millions across the country. The fact that these heroes could be given drugs from the VA with potentially harmful Chinese ingredients is a disgrace. As a physician, this is troubling and shocking to say the least. We must do better to serve the men and women who have given it all for this country. That’s why I implored VA Secretary McDonough to look into this matter in this week’s House Veterans' Affairs hearing. I was glad to receive his commitment and even talk to him privately about it before the hearing. You can watch our exchange by clicking here or on the image below.

It was great to have Mayor Tripp of Ayden, N.C. visit my office in Washington this week. We discussed everything from updating infrastructure, to police modernization, to affordable housing. We also had the chance to talk about their annual Collard Festival coming this September, which I know everyone in Eastern North Carolina is looking forward to! Thank you for coming by, Mayor Tripp!

In the District

Last week I was down in the District meeting with the great folks of Eastern North Carolina.

On Wednesday, Team Murphy visited U.S. Coast Guard Sector Field Office Fort Macon. I was able to review their search and rescue fleet, led by Fifth Coast Guard District Commander Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath and Sector North Carolina Commander Matthew Baer. This base is critical to our maritime safety. Just last year, a crew at Fort Macon responded urgently after the tragic Down East plane crash. We are forever grateful for the selfless service of the Coasties of Fort Macon!

Across the country, veterans face long wait lines and a lack of care on mental health issues. That's why I paid a visit to the new VA Clinic in Morehead City to better understand how we can better serve the 89,000 veterans of Eastern North Carolina. As a member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, it is important to hear firsthand how Congress can address the issues veterans face. And of course, it’s always a bonus to get to see some of the amazing veterans in Eastern North Carolina!

Speaking of veterans, the VA has now opened a portal to start processing claims for toxic exposure-related benefits. Last year, the Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act (PACT Act) was passed by Congress, giving veterans exposed to toxic hazards the benefits they deserve. Veterans in Eastern North Carolina wishing to apply for toxic exposure-related benefits can now do so by visiting www.va.gov/PACT or calling 1-800-MY-VA-411. If you are able to apply before August 10, 2023, benefits will be backdated to August 20, 2022. And please don’t hesitate to reach out to Team Murphy for assistance!
