KEEPING UP WITH CONGRESS Andrew Calls For Answers Following New York's Signature Bank Failure This week, Andrew joined with fellow Financial Services Committee Members to send a letter to New York State Department of Financial Services Superintendent Adrienne Harris demanding information on its supervision of Signature Bank following its recent closure. Given the unprecedented speed with which Signature and Silicon Valley Banks failed over a three-day period and the subsequent effects those failures had on the U.S. financial system, it is critical that policy makers understand the events leading up to and following the failure of Signature Bank. Read the letter here. Andrew Cosponsors Bill To Stop Bank Surveillance of Americans As part of its Build Back Better plan, which Andrew opposed, the Biden Administration proposed implementing a surveillance regime requiring banks and other financial institutions to provide the IRS details on their customers and data for accounts with deposits or withdrawals worth more than $600. As of January 2022, any financial transaction over $600 on mobile money apps must be reported to the IRS. This is a gross overreach by the Administration targeting everyday Americans. That's why Andrew cosponsored the Prohibiting IRS Financial Surveillance Act which would ban the IRS from implementing any new reporting requirements for banks or other financial institutions as part of the Biden Administration's aggressive bank surveillance regime.
