Donald Trump has been spewing some fresh bile on his imitation Twitter platform, Truth Social.
- On Thursday, Trump called Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who is Black, an “animal.”
- Faced with the prospect that the law might finally catch up with him, Trump said, “THIS IS THE GESTAPO … BUT WORSE.” The Gestapo was the secret Nazi police force that sent 6,000,000 Jews to their deaths during the Holocaust. Donald Trump thinks that what’s happening to him is worse than that.
- Trump mocked calls for his adherents to remain peaceful if he is arrested.
- Then — in the middle of the night — Trump warned of “potential death & destruction” if he is indicted.
Look, we are all tired of the former president.
But Donald Trump is invoking the specter of violence if he is charged with a crime. And we know — from what we saw on January 6, 2021 — that such talk can’t be dismissed out of hand.
We must not allow threats of violence to impede justice, accountability, and democracy — that is a one-way ticket to fascism. We must stand up for the rule of law.
A message to Alvin Bragg (Manhattan district attorney), Fani Willis (Fulton County, Georgia, district attorney), Jack Smith (U.S. Department of Justice special counsel), and Merrick Garland (U.S. attorney general):
When it comes to criminally charging Donald Trump, you must go where the facts and law take you. You must not bow to threats of physical violence. The American people have your back. Nobody is above the law.
