As Robert Reich explains in this video, corporations are using SLAPP lawsuits — “Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation” — to intimidate and silence organizations by burdening them with the costs of a legal defense.
And, winning the case isn’t even necessarily the goal. These lawsuits are becoming widespread as a way for corporations to drain groups of time and resources to have a chilling effect on all kinds of public-interest work from health care to workers rights to democracy.
For example, Energy Transfer Partners is filing suits over Standing Rock and the Dakota Access Pipeline, accusing environmental organizations of criminal conspiracy, ecoterrorism, and even drug trafficking!
Some of these lawsuits have been filed by Michael Bowe (a member of Trump’s personal legal team!) and he’s openly talking with other corporations to file more SLAPP suits.
