John,

On this day in 1965, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led thousands of brave men and women in a nonviolent demonstration, marching from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. Today we honor those who took part in these marches and remember their suffering, their sacrifice, and how their immense bravery changed the course of American history.

Over the past few years, I’d always looked forward to commemorating the Selma to Montgomery marches by crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge with my dear friend and colleague, Representative John Lewis, who sadly passed away in 2020.

As a young man in 1965, John mobilized people for the civil rights movement in his role as the Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and led the first Selma to Montgomery march, facing an attack from Alabama state troopers.

Ultimately, the three marches at Selma would impact the world and lead to the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a turning point in our nation's history.

Earlier this month marked the first time I've gone to Montgomery and Selma since his passing. As we walked in the path of the demonstrators all those years ago — his presence was felt with every step. We need to honor his legacy with action.

The fight for voting rights and self-determination is far from over. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, over 408 restrictive voting laws were considered by lawmakers in 39 states in 2022. Voter suppression is still rampant, with most of these types of bills geared toward undermining the voices of people of color.

I am proud to continue pushing for strong legislation that will ensure we are all equal and equally represented under the law. By taking strong action like passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, our nation can once again make strides toward the future.

Thank you,

Chris Coons
