This week the majority party unveiled their coordinated budget targets. These targets are spending targets given to each committee, and these targets are on top of the base budget of over $50 billion. The House DFL, Senate DFL, and Governor all agreed to these targets without taking any input from GOP leaders.
The budget targets show that the majority party intends to spend an additional $17.9 billion and raise the base budget to a whopping $70 billion. You read that right, they will be spending the entire surplus, raising taxes to pay for it, and increasing the size of government by an incredible 25%. This level of increase is unsustainable. I think that we need to give the surplus back instead of spending it and I will continue working to give the surplus back to the taxpayers by advocating for policies like the Social Security tax elimination.
This week I had the opportunity to speak at the Minnesota School Board Association?s Educational Panel along with other legislators from both bodies. I was invited to speak on the importance of local control and flexible learning. We need to fund education that will honor our elected school board members and empower our teachers, students, and families.
