Here’s what to expect coming up.
We’ll be watching the U.S. Supreme Court at the start of next week. On Monday, the Court will release orders in pending cases. We’re waiting on three cases, one involving congressional redistricting in Ohio, one involving congressional redistricting in Kansas and the last about felony disenfranchisement in Mississippi. Any or none of these orders could be released on Monday.
Then, on Tuesday, March 28, the Court will release opinions in pending cases. The Court could announce opinions in any of the cases that have already been argued, including the major voting rights cases Merrill v. Milligan and Moore v. Harper.
We also might find out if the Court has decided to dismiss Moore rather than issue a decision on the merits of the case. Remember, after the North Carolina Supreme Court agreed to rehear the underlying case that led to Moore, the U.S. Supreme Court asked the parties to submit briefing on whether or not the Court still has jurisdiction to hear the appeal. That briefing was submitted last Monday, so now a dismissal could come at any time if the Court so chooses. [link removed]
