Growing up in North Braddock, I witnessed the decline of my community that began long before I was born. How greedy CEO's decisions forced generations of working families out of their homes and into poverty while declining wages and a rising cost of living shuttered homes and businesses all around us.
I witnessed how the air was thick with pollution from the Mon Valley steel mills because corporations chose their own wealth over our health. How billionaires put profit over people — forcing communities like mine to rely on jobs that made us sick, while making us believe we had no other choice.
I witnessed how Black families would unequally suffer under policy decisions made by status quo politicians who had never witnessed or experienced what our family had — and never could.
John, my work is personal because it’s grounded and informed by lived experience. I ran for Congress because my community, and thousands of other Black, brown, and working-class communities across the country, are being left behind. Our crises demand urgency, attention — and above all — solutions.
