Happy National Agriculture Week!
This week celebrates and acknowledges the agricultural industry and the role it plays in stabilizing the economy. This is a special week to give thanks to the agriculture industry for being a source of abundant food, fiber, and renewable products. Agriculture also provides millions with stable jobs and careers.?As a proud farmer Legislator, serving on the House Agriculture Committee, I enjoyed meeting with numerous farmers from our district this week Including ? Farmers from Carver and McLeod County Farm Bureau (pictured below), MN Wheat Growers, MN Corn Growers Association, and MN Soybean Growers (pictured right).?
Here are a few statistics for MN Agriculture:
|
- Home to 67,400 farms with an average size of 377 acres.
- Supports more than 388,000 jobs.
- The top 5 agricultural commodities are corn, soybeans, hogs, cattle, and dairy.
- 53% of agriculture is crops and 47% is livestock.
?
Some of the priorities for MN Agriculture include:
- Protect Farmer?s ability to farm. The cost of production continues to soar. We will work together to protect crop inputs and prevent any unnecessary restrictions to our way of life.
- Advocate for biodiesel. Biodiesel is a clean-burning ultra-low carbon fuel. It is today?s solution for heavy-duty trucking, emergency vehicles, bus fleets, and farm equipment.
- Strengthening rural communities by allowing retiring farmers to pass operations to the next generation of farmers by implementing the beginning farmer tax credit.

Timothy Schochenmaier, Superintendent of Central Public Schools in Norwood Young America, stopped by to visit about legislation that will impact residents of the school district. Gary Lee from the MN School Board Association also stopped by to discuss legislation that will impact schools across our district. |

Carver County Sheriff Jason Kamerud stopped by to talk about issues facing the county. We discussed the legislative bills regarding our 2nd Amendment rights. We also talked about the changes within our jail population with more inmates suffering from mental illness. We are looking for ways to solve this critical issue for our district.
