Happy Birthday, Republican Party! |
On March 20, 1854, in Ripon, Wisconsin, a coalition of voters came together to form a new political party to oppose the advancement of slavery into the western United States. That party would come to be known as the Republican Party.
A few months after that monumental meeting in Ripon, a well-known newspaper publisher picked up on the name "Republican," writing in his paper, "We should not care much whether those thus united against slavery were designated 'Whig,' 'Free Democrat' or something else. Though we think some simple name like 'Republican' would more fitly designate those who had united to restore the Union to its true mission of champion and promulgator of Liberty rather than propagandist of slavery."
From our very beginning, we have been the party of freedom, opportunity, and prosperity; there's perhaps no better example of that then our first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln.
And since then, we've been a party of great leaders — like Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, and more. But that's true here in Indiana, too — think of statesmen like Benjamin Harrison, Dick Lugar, Dan Quayle, Dan Coats, Mitch Daniels, and Mike Pence, As a party, we have a proud history and an unmatched record of success. And we will continue to work to build upon this history, to fight for our proven agenda, to reach more Hoosiers, to grow our party, and elect Republicans up and down the ballot.

Op-ed: It's Time to Toss the Textbook Tax |
|
|
This week, Governor Eric Holcomb joined local officials and leaders and employees of Blue Buffalo, the nation’s leading natural pet food company, as they announced plans to expand the company’s operations in Richmond, creating 50-60 new jobs by the end of 2024. |
In a Sunday op-ed for the Times of Northwest Indiana, Gov. Holcomb called for ending "the textbook fees that parents pay."
"A child’s education is the key that opens the doors to their dreams and every child’s success is greatly determined by their parents and educators. That’s why I’m proud of the work we’ve accomplished thus far in making unprecedented investments in K-12 and I am committed to continue along the path of prioritizing education and your child’s future. Consistent with that mission, let’s remove barriers and provide students a free education; let’s end the textbook fees that parents pay.
"In my 2023 State of the State Address, I introduced Mandy Allen, an educator in the South Vermillion School Corporation, who paid about $630 for the 2022-2023 school year for her four children. She’s not alone. Hoosiers across the state are impacted. It could be your friend, your neighbor or it could be you. Click here to read the full piece. |

Indiana Republican Party Announces Members of Third Cohort of Diversity Leadership Series Program |
This week, we announced the members of the third cohort of our nationally-recognized seminar and leadership training program, the Indiana Republican Diversity Leadership Series (IRDLS). The program provides the preparation and necessary resources to increase the civic engagement of minority Republicans throughout the state and bring them into leadership positions.
“Each year our program has welcomed a group of Hoosiers that are driven to make a real difference in their communities, and this year is certainly no different,” stated Chairman Kyle Hupfer. “With some participants already running for local office and others getting involved in the party in other ways, I’m excited to see how this cohort will engage with the program and use it to help them develop into strong, effective leaders.”
The cohort of 16 Hoosiers represents a wide range of backgrounds and includes entrepreneurs, ministers, lobbyists, financial advisors and more from communities across Indiana. Click here to read the full news release and click here to learn more about the cohort.

If you know a college student that's interested in stepping into the world of Hoosier politics, we've got them covered.
We're looking for young, talented Hoosiers to join us at our headquarters in Indianapolis. This opportunity allows them to get hands-on experience working for Indiana's largest and most successful political organization, providing administrative support to staff and taking on special projects (and more) while helping build their resume, gain insight into the political and legislative processes, and make valuable connections. And we'll do this all while helping them earn college credit.
Have someone in mind? Send them to this link for more information and to apply! |
